Every vehicle requires routine maintenance to keep it running smoothly and safely. One of those routine maintenance tasks is checking the air pressure. While you’re checking your tire pressure, take a look at the treads on all four tires. If the treads become too worn down, it can pose a safety hazard for you and your passengers. Get new tires promptly as needed.
Importance of Checking Your Tire Pressure
A tire that is under-inflated isn’t as safe as one that’s properly inflated. Under-inflated tires wear out more quickly, have a higher risk of damage and tire blowouts, and can lead to the loss of control of the car. In addition to an increased risk of car crashes, under-inflated tires decrease the gas mileage of the car.
When to Check Your Tire Pressure
You should check your air pressure at least once per month. Do it when the tires are “cold,” or rested. Additional times to check your tire pressure include when the weather turns from warm to cold, if you strike a curb, or if you run over debris on the road, such as a potentially sharp object. You could also get into the habit of visually checking your tires as you walk up to your car in the driveway or parking lot. If a tire is leaking air, you’ll be able to notice the drastic difference in its appearance.
How to Check Your Tire Pressure
Handheld tire pressure gauges are inexpensive items. You can easily fit one into your glove compartment or center console. First, check the recommended tire pressure for your make and model of car. You’ll find this number on the driver’s side door jamb. Then, unscrew the cap of the air valve on your tire. Insert the tire gauge and check the dial for the pressure reading. If your pressure is low, inflate the tire until you reach the recommended pressure. Do not overinflate your tire. Then, replace the air valve cap. Repeat this process for the other three tires.
