Whatever type of vehicle you drive, having the right tires makes driving both safer and more enjoyable. Replacing worn tires is a substantial investment, but there are a few guidelines that can help reduce costs and increase value.

Function

The primary function of tire tread is to divert water from the tire to improve traction. That improved traction prevents hydroplaning when roads are wet. When the tread has worn down to 1/16 thof an inch or less, traction is lost, which can result in unsafe driving conditions. Other than the function of tire tread, common to all tires, specific tires are built for specific functions. Some are built for speed and quick handling, while others are designed specifically for smooth long-distance driving. Off-road and all-season tires are designed for rough terrain and changing weather conditions.

Safety

It’s important to buy the right type of tire for your specific vehicle and driving conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that tire failures are responsible for 200 traffic fatalities every year. Many of those failures are caused by a lack of proper tire maintenance. Experts recommend rotating your tires every 7,500 miles or six months to detect misalignment and avoid uneven wear. The tires on each axle should be the same size and have the same speed rating designation. If you are only replacing two tires, the new tires should be placed in the rear for greater handling ability. When mixing radial and non-radial tires, the radial tires must be in the rear.

Performance

Car and tire companies collaborate and spend millions on developing tires that best enhance the handling capabilities of specific vehicles. That’s why many people choose to replace their worn tires with a perfect match of the original equipment. However, many people find that option too expensive. With regular maintenance, tires can last from three to six years, so an unwise choice can have long-term consequences.
